This amazing residence/fortress was built by Earl Robert (an illegitimate son of King James V of Scotland) between 1569 and 1579. Although now in ruins, it was once the last word in palatial luxury – unfortunately built for one of the most despotic and tyrannical rulers Orkney has ever known.
